NFL Andrew Thomas Contract Signs Five-Year Extension

Earlier this week, Andrew Thomas, the talented left tackle, signed a ground breaking contract with the Giants. Let’s take a closer look at the key details of this significant deal:

  • Thomas will become the second-highest paid left tackle in the NFL, earning an impressive $23.5 million per season. This places him among the top earners at his position.
  • The contract includes a record-setting $67 million fully guaranteed at signing. This substantial guarantee is a testament to Thomas’ skills and value to the team.
  • Starting with the 2023 season, Thomas will receive a base salary of $1.02 million, accompanied by a generous signing bonus of $15 million. This substantial raise of $11 million demonstrates the team’s recognition of his contributions. Furthermore, the Giants will enjoy a savings of $1 million against the salary cap with this arrangement.
  • In 2024, Thomas will benefit from a guaranteed base salary of $14.175 million and a guaranteed roster bonus of $5 million. Additionally, he has the opportunity to earn up to $1 million in per-game bonuses and a $500,000 workout bonus. The salary cap number for this year will be $23.675 million, representing a significant increase of $9.5 million compared to his rookie contract. Overall, Thomas will receive a $6.5 million raise from his previous contract.
  • As the official extension year, 2025 will see Thomas earn a guaranteed salary of $16.4 million. Similar to the previous years, he has the chance to earn $1 million in per-game bonuses and a $500,000 workout bonus. With a cap number of $20.9 million, Thomas will have accumulated an impressive new money total of $35.4 million from 2023 to 2025.

Andrew Thomas’ new contract demonstrates the Giants’ commitment to securing his services for the long term. With exceptional financial terms and guaranteed money, Thomas is poised to continue his success on the field while solidifying his position as one of the highest-paid left tackles in the NFL.

Andrew Thomas Salary Giants

In 2026, Thomas is set to receive a salary of $15.9 million, with $15.4 million being fully guaranteed. He will also have the opportunity to earn the same per-game and workout bonuses. At this point, his cumulative cash flow will amount to $52.8 million, while his cap charge will be $20.4 million.

Moving on to 2027, Thomas will have a base salary of $15.4 million, along with a March roster bonus of $2.5 million. He will also be eligible for $1.5 million in additional bonuses. The cap charge for this year will be $22.4 million. Over the course of three years, Thomas will have earned a total of $72.2 million in new money.

In 2028, Thomas’ salary will increase to $18.4 million, and he will receive another $2.5 million roster bonus in March. The workout and per-game bonuses will remain the same. The cap charge for this year will remain unchanged at $22.4 million, bringing his four-year cash earnings to $94.6 million.

Lastly, in the final year of the contract, Thomas will earn a salary of $18.9 million, a $2.5 million roster bonus, and be eligible for $1.5 million in per-game and workout bonuses. The cap number for this year will be $22.9 million, resulting in a total contract value of $117.5 million.

Overall, this contract is deemed fair for both parties involved. The cash flow structure of the contract seems to favor the Giants to some extent. Let’s compare the new money earnings of Thomas with other tackles in the NFL to gain a better perspective.

Andrew Thomas NFL History

Andrew Thomas’ contract is ranked second overall in annual value and first overall among long-term contracts. Despite this, the Giants have managed to keep his cash flows at the third position in the NFL over the first two new years. However, the contract takes a turn in year 3 and 4, moving Thomas into higher-ranking positions.

Justin Herbert Contract $262.5 Million

Andrew Thomas has a strong guarantee of $67 million, which is the most ever guaranteed at signing for a left tackle. This represents a $47.8 million raise over his prior contract and is the new full guarantee on the contract. This guarantee ranks second to Ronnie Stanley of the Ravens, who has a $51.25 million guarantee. Andrew Thomas can narrow the gap by $2.5 million by attending workouts and remaining healthy in 2024 and 2025 to earn the non-guaranteed salaries in the contract.

Although Thomas’ $67 million in total guarantees is also second to Stanley’s $70.9 million, his new guarantee only remains at $47.8 million compared to Stanley’s $58 million. This drop in percentage compared to other players at his position may lead to an argument for more injury protection in the contract.

The Giants have a very favorable length of contract for Andrew Thomas. The market is limited for players who sign deals with two years remaining on their existing contract, and while Stanley took a five-year contract at a similar stage, the other players at four seasons were all on lower-valued contracts or on their third contract. Although there was a possibility for Thomas to argue for a shorter deal like Laremy Tunsil’s 2020 three-year extension when he had one year remaining on his contract, it was considered one of the most player-friendly deals in the NFL.

The salary cap numbers in the contract are also steady, and with a moderate $15 million signing bonus, the Giants would have the flexibility to convert salary to a bonus if necessary, without making the contract a burden. Additionally, there is virtually no dead money starting in the 2027 season. With the salary cap likely to increase, the Giants should now have set a reasonable cost for their star left tackle. By the time the second new year hits, the backend of the starter market will begin pulling close to this number, which means New York should have locked in an elite tackle at a good starter price.
