The 2007 NFL Draft: Overview and Format

The 2007 National Football League Draft was the 72nd annual meeting of National Football League (NFL) franchises held to select newly eligible American football players. It took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York, on April 28 and April 29, 2007.

Draft Selections and Coverage

There were 255 draft selections: 223 regular selections (instead of the typical 224) and 32 compensatory selections. The draft was televised for the 28th consecutive year on ESPN and ESPN2, with the NFL Network also broadcasting coverage of the event for the second year. A supplemental draft was also held after the regular draft and before the regular season. This was the first draft presided over by new NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

First Round and Big Stories

The first round was the longest in the history of the NFL draft, lasting six hours, eight minutes. One of the biggest stories of the draft was the fall of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. Quinn had been projected as a potential first overall pick in early mock drafts and had been invited to attend the draft in person, but he wasn’t selected until the 22nd pick in the first round by the Cleveland Browns, who acquired the pick in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys.

LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell was selected first overall by the Oakland Raiders after he had replaced Quinn as the projected first selection among most analysts following his performance in the 2007 Sugar Bowl against Quinn and Notre Dame.

Notable Draft Picks and Bleacher Report Recognition

Despite the top picks’ lackluster performances, Bleacher Report named the 2007 draft class the “greatest draft class in the last 25 years” in 2012 due to the heavy volume of reliable starters, as well as players selected that are now widely regarded as future Hall of Famers, such as Patrick Willis, Darrelle Revis, Marshawn Lynch, and Marshal Yanda. First round selections Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, and Adrian Peterson are also widely regarded as being among the greatest to ever play at their respective positions.

Active NFL Player from 2007 Draft

As of 2023, Nick Folk is the only active NFL player from the 2007 draft still signed to an NFL team.

2007 NFL Draft Quarterbacks

The 2007 NFL Draft was a significant year for quarterbacks. Many talented quarterbacks were selected in this draft, some of whom went on to have successful careers in the NFL.

JaMarcus Russell

  • Selected as the first overall pick by the Oakland Raiders, JaMarcus Russell was highly regarded for his strong arm and impressive physical attributes.
  • Unfortunately, Russell’s career did not live up to expectations, and he is often regarded as one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history.
  • Despite his potential, Russell struggled with consistency and off-field issues, ultimately leading to his early exit from the league.

Brady Quinn

  • Brady Quinn was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the 22nd overall pick in the 2007 draft.
  • While Quinn had a successful college career at Notre Dame, his NFL career did not pan out as expected.
  • He struggled to secure a starting position and bounced around several teams before eventually retiring from professional football.

Kevin Kolb

  • Kevin Kolb was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 2007 draft.
  • Kolb showed promise and had a few successful seasons as a backup quarterback, but his career was plagued by injuries.
  • Despite his talent, Kolb was unable to establish himself as a consistent starting quarterback in the league.

Other Quarterbacks

  • Other quarterbacks selected in the 2007 draft include John Beck, Drew Stanton, Trent Edwards, and Isaiah Stanback.
  • While some of these players had brief stints as starters in the NFL, their careers did not reach the same level of success as some of their counterparts.

In conclusion, the 2007 NFL Draft was notable for the quarterbacks selected, but the overall success of these players varied greatly. While some, like JaMarcus Russell, failed to live up to expectations, others, like Brady Quinn and Kevin Kolb, showed promise but faced challenges in establishing themselves as long-term starters in the league.
